The project “Förde 5G – Maritime Urban Mobility” aims to research and test hands-on the demand and benefit of the newly available mobile phone standard 5G in the areas of autonomous passenger ferries, port logistics and sailing on and around the Kiel inner fjord.

The focus of the project lies on the development, testing and demonstration of systems that use 5G to enable autonomous means of transport via water and create a long-term connection between them.

In 2019, the State Capitol Kiel together with the Kiel university successfully participated in the “5G Innovation Competition” hosted by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). Later on in 2021, the project was granted funding. In 2021, the project was awarded the contract for implementation. As a result, almost four million euros in funding went to the state capital and its project partners over the following three years.

DSN supported the conception phase and application process and was commissioned with project management.
